Dear Katherine,
I witnessed the most remarkable thing today:
A wild mare running across the prairie.
Bucking just for show, her mane flying in the wind.
I thought, this is what it means to be free.
As she drew closer I saw the length of barbed wire
on her foot, slicing into her pastern.
Pain with every step. Bleeding. Festering. Raw.
Removing this wire was my only concern.
But the beautiful sorrel bolted when I drew near.
Pure fear in her eyes, she could not trust me.
Sadly I watched her race out of sight, forever.
And I realized, she’s not really free.
With Love,
RH Hope
